Cafe Chairs – how to choose them

Choosing chairs for your café can be an overwhelming task what with so many styles, colours and materials to choose from. We suggest you narrow down your search by firstly deciding whether your chairs are for indoor or outdoor use or both.

That decided the next step is to decide which material is best suited to your needs. Some of the most popular materials for cafe chairs include wood, metal, wicker, and plastic. We’ve put together a few pros and cons of each to help you decide which is your preference.

Wood or timber café chairs

Wooden chairs are extremely popular not only because they’re strong and durable but also because they add a feeling of warmth and cosiness to any space. They’re ideal for traditional settings but, depending on their style, are also a good choice for upmarket cafes. Available in many different shades of timber and with a choice of upholstered cushions and backs, they’re popular with café owners and customers alike.

On the downside, wooden chairs may require more maintenance and can be heavy to move around. They will also need to be treated if they are to be used outdoors.

Metal chairs

Metal chairs are another popular choice for cafes and bars and are particularly well suited to industrial themes. Many, but not all, metal café chairs can be used outdoors too. Wrought iron is a popular choice for outdoor chairs and looks charming and rustic but be aware that they are extremely heavy to move.

Steel chairs have grown hugely in the popularity stakes partly influenced by the resurrection of Xavier Pauchard’s Tolix chairs which were first introduced in the 1930s. Made from steel, they are strong yet surprisingly light and can be moved easily from one place to another to meet customer demands. We have a great range of replica Tolix chairs for you to choose from, all of which are available in a variety of bold colours and lustrous metallic shades. They’re well-constructed and easy to maintain, needing little more than a wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris.

On the downside, metal chairs without cushions can feel uncomfortably hot or cold depending on the weather.

Steel and metal combo

If you can’t make up your mind between the two materials then you don’t have to. Many of our cafe chairs consist of a metal frame with a wooden seat and/or backrest. We particularly like our Student Chairs which have a retro look to them and we’re also fond of our Hairpin chair which boasts a timber seat, powder-coated steel frame with a black finish, and those quirky legs that look just like a hairpin ladies use to secure their hair into a top knot.

Again, these chairs need very little maintenance and could be a good choice for your café.

Wicker chairs

Wicker chairs have been popular for many decades and are considered to be suitable for outdoor use. While wicker chairs look attractive their traditional design doesn’t fare well over time since the grasses used to make the woven seat and backrest and the cane used for the frame, often splits, cracks, or rots due to inclement weather.

We offer an alternative by means of our Parisian chair with a V pattern. This attractive chair has a lightweight aluminium frame with a seat and backrest that is made from nylon wicker. Looking every bit like a true French café chair, it stacks for convenient storage and can be used indoors and outdoors to give your café a seamless flow.

Plastic or Polypropylene

Most people associate polypropylene chairs with outdoor use, and it’s true that they are an ideal choice for an outdoor terrace or patio. Because they’re lightweight and stackable, they’re also good for events and can be easily transported to a venue.

That said, polypropylene chairs can be used to good effect indoors too, as illustrated by our Loft chair. This modern chair features a polypropylene shell with tubular steel legs that are finished to look like timber. Extremely comfortable, these café chairs are intended for indoor use only.

The main benefit of polypropylene chairs is that they’re relatively inexpensive and come in a huge arrange of colours and styles, so it’s quick and easy to set up an outdoor terrace or patio to attract more customers through your doors. In addition, the only maintenance necessary is a quick wash down from time to time. We suggest lining all your plastic chairs up in a row and hosing them down with cold water, leaving them to dry naturally.

So now you know more about the pros and cons of each type of cafe chair material, it should be easier still to narrow down your search.
