When you’re furnishing your cafe it’s important to choose the right table tops, which means not just the right material and style, but the right size too. If youre not sure what table tops you should be buying then we’ve put together a handy guide to help you make the right choice.
Size
Arguably this is the most important consideration before you start to look at materials, styles, and colours. The size of table depends to a great extent on your target customer, the size of your dining area, and the type of menu you’ll be serving.
Many cafe owners prefer to choose square tables since these are more versatile and cater for just 2 people, 3 or 4 people, or can be pushed together to cater for larger parties. You may also want to consider utilising a few 600m round tables as these are great for slotting into corners and small recesses and work well for solo diners as well as couples.
Material
There are many different types of materials for table tops so it can be tricky knowing which to go for. Ultimately the type of finish is less important than ensuring that your table tops are suitable for an environment such as a bustling cafe. To this end you need to buy commercial table tops as domestic styles won’t have the staying power.
The main difference between the table tops on offer is that some have a solid finish which means they’re made from hardwood and others are typically MDF or particle board faced with a protective coating of veneer or laminate. These make an excellent choice because they’re hard wearing and durable and look just like real wood at a fraction of the cost.
Colour
With size and material sorted, the next decision is what colour to choose. This depends to a large extend on your décor or theme. Some people like the idea of mixing and matching table tops and chairs whereas others like to match up table top colours with existing permanent features such as bar counters. Dark wood tends to lend a traditional, cosy look whereas lighter woods are more modern and can make a small space look more spacious. You could of course, settle for a plain colour, or various finishes such as granite or cement. You might also want to consider stainless steel which offers a modern aesthetic too.
Practical
Finally it stands to reason that you need a table top that is practical. Melamine style table tops are ideal for busy environments since they’re heat and stain resistant and need little more than a wipe with a damp cloth to clean them. They’re also suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Real wood looks great but you will need to protect it with a table cloth and coasters. You might also have to re-stain it on a yearly basis.
