How To Create An Industrial Look For Your Venue

industrial style cafeThe industrial or ‘loft look’ as it’s often called has been hugely popular within the hospitality industry and shows no signs of abating. It’s not just a popular trend in Australia either. Having recently visited New York we found many bars, restaurants, and cafes that were fitted out with pendant lights, Tolix chairs and wooden tables. We thought it might be a good idea to give you some tops on creating your own industrial look, so here goes…..

Overall Space

It’s all about starting off with the right foundation and that’s your room structure. Get this right and the rest will be easy. During this process raw materials should be on the top of your list and this includes plenty of wood and metal. Exposed beams and metal girders are one of the main favourites as they create a feature on their own. In addition exposed brickwork or wood ceiling panels provides the perfect finishing touch. It’s also important to retain as much natural light as possible, as sometimes this type of setting can appear a little dark.

Bar counter

If your venue has a bar counter then you could use this as the main focal point of your cafe or bar. Try and create a memorable counter that your customers can’t take their eyes off as this creates a great lasting impression. Raw materials such as wood and stainless steel still remain important, as too does subtle lighting. Stainless steel is a good choice for bar tops since it’s easy to keep clean. Don’t forget to make both sides of the bar equally appealing and interesting to look at.

Lighting

Lighting fixtures can make or break your design, so it’s important to get this part right. Quirky light shades made from jam jars or stands made from pipe works are sure to leave a lasting impression. Large light bulbs suspended across the length of the counter also works well to give a gentle glow across all the natural materials, as does low slung copper pendant lighting.

Tables

A mix of table sets is appreciated by customers as it gives them choice and also adds to the quirkiness of your venue. A mix of wood and stainless steel or cast iron is a great choice. From scaffold style bases to Tolix style meeting tables, and cast iron bistro sets – the possibilities are endless. Be careful to ensure that your tables complement the rest of the décor.

Seating

It’s the iconic classics that work best in this style of setting. Seating such as Tolix chairs, hairpin stools, and Turner draughting stools should be at the top of your list. With plenty of affordable replicas on the market and lots of colours to choose from, they’re great for adding a pop of colour.

Flooring

Finally, this is an important factor when putting your look together. Again try and stick to raw industrial materials for a floor that not only looks impressive but matches the style chosen for the rest of your venue. Wood and metal are two obvious choices but you could also use rustic tiles for more of an exotic feel.
