If you’ve ever wondered why replica Tolix furniture is so popular, particularly in cafes, bars, and restaurants, it’s because it’s strong, durable, and relatively inexpensive. As well as looking good, Tolix-style furniture is practical, functional, and in our opinion – beautiful!
Tolix furniture may appear to have a modern look, after all, it’s 2019 and it’s everywhere, so you might be surprised to learn that it dates back to the 1930s.
How it all began
It all began with Xavier Pauchard, a humble French man working in a steel factory. As a visionary, he began to experiment with steel galvanisation and having perfected the skill he used it to make steel products for the home.
He patented the name ‘Tolix’ in 1927 and began to make metal chairs and stools. Because they were cheap and relatively easy to make, they were ideal for use by large groups of people and became popular in factories, hospitals and schools.
They were also to be seen in all the bars and cafes lining the streets of Paris. In fact, they became so commonplace that breweries began giving them away to bars in return for them stocking their beer.
He rose to fame in 1937 with his ‘A’ chair which was modified to enable bar and restaurant owners to be able to stack them with ease. This particular chair has become iconic with the name Tolix and can be seen today at the MOMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou of Paris.
The popularity of the Tolix chair declined after the 2nd world war as the public turned to other chair styles that were being introduced. Unfortunately, the company also went into bankruptcy but was rescued in 2004 by Chantal Andriot, who previously had acted as the company’s financial director. He fell in love with the brand and introduced lots of exciting new colours into the range. Previously the chairs were mostly their natural silver steel colour or red.
