Setting The Scene With The Right Cafe Lighting

pendant lightingIn this age of the skinny latte and the meteoric rise of the Barista it probably comes as no surprise that cafes are more popular than ever before. This means that for anyone looking to open such a venue, they’re going to be doing it amidst a plethora of competition. This means that if you want to stand out from the crowd, then every detail has to be right and that includes the lighting.

All too often lighting is the last thing that cafes think about after they’ve fretted over the right type of coffee, décor, furniture and food. The reality is however that get the lighting wrong, and you’re likely to put customers off. That’s even before they get to taste your great coffee or wonderful home made cakes! Conversely creating the right scene with mood lighting will entice people in. With this in mind what should you be looking for?

Matching the day

Breakfast

When serving breakfast it’s ideal to have stronger and more intense lighting. Customers want to be able to grab a shot of espresso or a quick bagel while perusing through the days news. They want to be able to feel awake and alert ready to take on the day and targeted lighting (particularly spot lighting) does this very well.

Lunch

Getting the lighting right for lunchtime trade can be difficult. In the first instance some people want to be able to grab their lunch and the inevitable cup of coffee and eat it relatively quickly as they probably have limited time. Therefore soft mood lighting probably isn’t the best idea. On the other hand, others might want to relax in a comfortable seating area and unwind before they go back to work and in this case pendant lighting or desk lighting may be the answer.

Evening

In the evening people have more time to linger, so you want to keep the lighting soft and relatively intimate. Try wall sconces with pearlised bulbs for a softer shade or softer pendant lighting. Personalised lighting in the form of candles are also a good idea.

What can the right lighting do for your cafe?

Firstly it creates a welcoming ambience and if the rest of your cafe is right in terms of décor, food, customer service and furniture, then the right lighting is the icing on the cake. Secondly lighting has the ability to give your cafe that wow factor. Why not use your lighting as a statement piece? Whether it’s a large chandelier or some LED mood lighting it can really add a touch of pizazz! Finally use it as an enhancer for décor, furniture ,or even food and it can have quite a dramatic effect on your outside or inside space.
