What Exactly Is Werzalit?

werzalit-table-topsHere at Cafe Chairs Sydney we answer questions about our cafe furniture all day, ever day. Some of the questions are in regard to a customer’s particular situation but many are relative to all of our customers and crop up quite frequently. As a result we thought we’d start posting some of the questions and answers on our blog so that all customers and potential customers can benefit from additional information.

One of the many questions we receive is about table tops. Most people know what a laminate, resin, or wood table top is but many people ask “what is Werzalit?”

Werzalit is a company

Werzalit is a German company which was first founded in 1923 by Jakob Friedrich Werz. The company produced animal glue which it supplied to plywood manufacturers and local craftsmen. In 1941 Werz took over a company which produced moulded plywood which was used for such things as chair seats and backs as well as housings for the radio industry. Eventually Werz developed a patented process in which wood chip was mixed with synthetic resin glue and additives to create table surfaces that were ready to use, serving trays, and wall panelling. Having been sold in 1987 to an Australian owner due to Werz’s poor health, the company has since 2002 been back under family ownership and is now run by Jacob Werz’s grandson who strives for innovation and new technologies.

Werzalit is a process

The patented process which was developed in the 1950’s was also called Werzalit. It uses specialist machines which create enormous pressure to mould wood grains and resins into usable shapes. The process and technology is licensed by Werzalit (the company) to manufacturers all around the world.

Werzalit is a material

When most people speak of Werzalit, they’re normally referring to the actual material as in a Werzalit table top for example. As a material, it’s a dense strong composite which is resistant to scratches, staining, and fluctuations in temperature. It’s one of the leading brands in the hospitality industry because of its durability, low maintenance, and consistent performance even under harsh indoor and outdoor conditions.

While Werzalit is the name that springs to most people’s minds for offering wood/polymer composite tables, there are alternatives available which produce the same material composite only under different names and lower price points. For example, Isotop utilise the same manufacturing process as Werzalit but are available at a cheaper price.

Both Werzalit and Isotop offer an extensive range of table tops in a variety of sizes, colours, patterns, and styles and since we carry both brands, you’re sure to find just what you’re looking for.
